The City of Chicago has finally decided to once and for all do away with the infamous Blue Bag Recycling program and announced it will adopt the blue bin recycling method that is already thriving in many villages such as Oak Park.
The target date to place the bins in city alleys is set for 2011. However, only a third of the city's 600,000 homes with city garbage service will obtain bins this year. The rest will have to wait as 140,000 more will be added each year until 2011.
In the meantime, residents are urged to bring recyclables to area drop-off centers for collection.
This long overdue change has been called for by environmentalists since the city first adopted the failed blue bag program in 1995.
Embarrassment over the delayed action is speculated to have prevented Mayor Daley from appearing at a formal news conference last Friday to announce the change.
