What about the cost of maintaining the energy grid? I have seen studies showing that it would be more cost effective to use residential wind power then for energy companies to continue maintaining the aging energy grid. Also for new construction it is in some areas less expensive to buy alternative then pay for electric lines to run to the development or home. Also energy costs keep going up. Making the investment now will definitely pay off in the future. We are installing a Helix wind system with a solar backup and solar hot water.

In addition to calculating solar and wind to the home updating the house may need to be considered. Lowering energy costs by getting insulation, new windows, new appliances and installing LED lighting may reduce energy needs and therefore the cost of the solar or wind system.
